Take Advantage of Any Free Time

If you have long study periods or long bus ride, use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. Flash cards are a great learning tool. They are easy to make, easy to handle and are a marvelous tool to help you learn and remember anything. Punch a hole in the upper left corner of each index card and connect the stack of your flash cards with a ring. Then the cards are bound and not flopping around.   Flash cards bound like this act like a small book with pages you can even have a separate ringed stack for each subject. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO REMEMBER, PUT IT ON A CARD.

Study with a Friend

Get together with friends and classmates to quiz each other, compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joying a study group.

Communicate 

If you have concerns about the amount or type of homework you have you might want to talk to your family, teachers or counselors. They can help you understand how much time you need to allot for homework and how to manage your task.

Celebrate Your Achievement

Reward yourself for hitting milestones or doing something well.

Additional Tips

Although working and going to school is challenging, it can be a rewarding experience if you use some foresight. These tips can help you handle the situation and make the most of your time:

·       Discuss your plans with your family. Balancing the demands of school and work is easier with their support.

·       Start slowly; don’t commit to working a lot of hours immediately.

·       Avoid time conflicts by planning your class and work schedules as far ahead of time as possible.

·       Use your time efficiently.  You use 10 minutes waiting in a line to go over a few pages of assigned reading. If your job has a lot of down time and your boss has no objection, you can use slow periods to do schoolwork.

·       If you commute to your job on public transportation, bring your schoolwork with you so you can work along the way.

·       Be flexible and willing to make sacrifices. You may have to cut down on some other thing you might like to do because of your school and work commitments.

·       If you have too much on your plate, admit it. Then cut back as needed.

·       Schedule relaxation. Everyone needs some down time to stay happy and healthy

How will they deal with peer pressure? Motivation> Success of lack there of? The life of a teenager is full of tough issue and life changing decisions. As a parent, you are responsible to help them learn the principles and ethics that will help them to reach their goal s and live a successful life.

While it’s all well and good to tell kids how to live their lives, ‘‘teens watch what you do more than they listen to what you say,” Covey says. So practice what you preach. Your example can be very influential.

Covey himself has done well by following a parent’s example. His dad, Stephen Covey, wrote the book The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, which sold over 15 million copies. Sean’s a chip off the old block, and no slacker. His own book has rung in a more than respectable 2 million copies sold. Here are his seven habits, and some ideas for helping your teen understand and apply them: Choose the Right!

3 . . . . ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. This process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish science. It’s your choice.

4 . . . . learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: that would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.

Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor they are not an enemy, you share the same interests the same goals in short your teammates, get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player.

My overall study method: I break up studying over several days and over the course of the evening and day. Cramming never works for me so I try not to do it. I will have longer sessions on nights before big test; I never stay up later than normal before tests. I know that if I test tired I won’t do as well as I would if I were rested.

How I’ve overcome an initial bad grade: I usually look over the test or paper to see did I do that the teacher did not want. Basically I do not stress about bad grade because to me it’s not worth getting really upset about. I do well because I know that I know the material. However if I do get a bad grade I make sure to study for the next one to be even better and so I won’t get surprised by the questions.
