Student Success Statement
“What’s right isn’t always popular. What is popular isn’t always right.”
Howard Cosell
R
eflection: This statement means that even if everybody is doing wrong things doesn’t mean you have to as well. For example if everyone at a party is smoking weed and drinking it doesn’t make it right for you to do the same thing as well. Another example of this is that donating money and being a good citizen is done by most people but it’s still the right thing to do and if other people aren’t doing it that shouldn’t stop you from doing what’s good.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS

ΓΌ Successful Students

7 . . . . Understand that actions affect learning. Successful students know their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning.
If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like you’re bored, and you’ll become bored. Act like you’re disinterested, and you’ll become disinterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom, “act” like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic.
8. . . . Talk about what they’re learning. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words. Talking about something, with friends or classmates is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from a short-term to long-term   memory. You really don’t “know” materials until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don’t do it silently. Talks about notes, problems, reading, etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, and pretend your teaching your peers. “Talk-learning” producers a whole host of memory trace that result in more learning.

Successful Students

Successful Students

5. Don’t sit in the back of the room. Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning. Students want the best seat available for their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst seat for their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professor’s teammate (see no. 4). Why do they expose themselves to the temptation of inactive classroom experience and
distractions of all the people between them and their instructor? Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility or anonymity, both of which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning . if you are trying not to be part of the class, why, then are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons, is there something else you should be doing with your time?

6. . . . take good notes. Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often.
Why put something into your notes you don’t understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make your notes meaningful at some later time. A short review of your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps you to learn more. The more you learn then, the less you’ll have to learn later and the less time it will take because you won’t have time, also. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them and use them often.

“The time is always right to do what is right.”

Reflection: This is something Martin Luther King said so of course it’s important because he was a very wise man and he didn’t wait for the time to be right to stop for slavery to be over.

3 . . . . ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. This process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish science. It’s your choice.

4 . . . . learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: that would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.
Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor they are not an enemy, you share the same interests the same goals in short your teammates, get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player.

I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.” Ernest Hemingway
Pay attention to what’s right and what’s wrong.
Reflection:  this statement means that if you feel good about doing something then you done the right thing but if you feel bad about something than you did something bad.

Successful student
1-2
Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity. Successful students…..
1.    …Are responsible and active. Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibilities for their own education, and are active participants in it! Responsibilities mean control. It’s the difference between leading and being led. Your own efforts control your grade, you earn the glory or deserve the blame, you make the choice. Active classroom participants improves in grades without in cress in study time. You can sit there, act board, day dream, or sleep. Or, you can actively listen, think, question, and take note like someone in charge of their learning experience. Ether potion cost one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the letter provides at one sitting. The choice is yours.
2.    2.   … Have educational goals. Successful students have legitimate goals and are motivated by what they represent in terms of career aspirations and life’s desires.
Ask yourself these questions: what am I doing here? Why have I chosen to be sitting here now?  Is there some better place I could be? What does my present here mean to me? Answer to these questions represent your “hot buttons” and are, without a doubt, the most important factor in your success as a college student. If you’re educational goals are truly yours, not someone else's, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tired of being a student, nothing can stop you; if you aren't and don't, everything can and will!

“My strength is as the strength of ten but my heart is pure”
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Reflection: This statement I think speaks to all the sport players, because it says that that person can be really strong as if he were 10 people. But it also says he has a pure heart, in other words meaning that he doesn’t take any steroids to boost him, or anything of that matter. Also he could be talking about that he’s gotten too well built but he still is very healthy and has no heart condition.

English, math, foreign language tips: Practice—especially forge in language. Is it hard to succeed in a forge in language class if you are just showing up and doing the work? But if you are in your class room and look at objects and try to say them in the language you are learning it actually helps. Or if you send a simple text to your friend think about it this way you can translate to German or Spanish. These are the little things that will help. Here are my final words of wisdom for students who want to get better grades in college: time management and organization are critical key factors to success in college. And never be afraid to go and ask your teacher for help. They have office hour for a reason use them.

My strategies for written assignments: everyone has their own wrighting styles. I generally come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research before I ever think about wrighting them. I always print out
the paper and come back to it the next day and reread it. That is the easiest way for me to catch my own mistake. I have to give my eyes a break from it and if I just wrote it I think it looks perfect. But if I look at it a day later I always find grammatical errors and phrases and sentence I just want to reword.
How I succeed in team projects: Never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and have each member show their work, not just give you or the group their word for it.

Study for Multiple Exams

Study for Multiple Exams
Part 1
How I study for multiple exams, deal with multiple projects: Really it is my time management that I explained above. If I see I have multiple things due or to study for all at the same time I spread out my time beforehand. For example if I have a test on Monday and 2 tests Tuesday then I will study for my Monday test on Thursday and Friday and I will study for my Tuesday test on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday I will review the for the Monday test since I have already study for it. Then once I’m done with my Monday test I can review for my Tuesday tests. My overall study method is that I try to break up the test in several days. I get bogged down if I pull an all-nighter. How I overcome an initial bad grade is by knowing that I probably didn’t study properly for that class and sometimes I talk to the teacher one what I can do to bring up my bad grade. Then they suggest what I should do differently on the next test and how I can study on the next test to get a better grade.

Sarah’s Academic Success Story
Part 2  <3
My test study methods: I have different strategies for different types of test or subject. For me, any type of math is exceptionally difficult so I had to spend extra time on that. I would go back through the homework problems focusing on the problems that I had extra difficulty on. Many times I would ask the teacher for additional study materials they could provide. If it was a class that required memorization or applying concepts I would create a shot study guide for myself many times focusing on what were key focal points in the class. If I knew there were going to be essays I would try to take the terms and apply them to an example or create different questions on the concepts focused on throughout the semester. My time management secret: I always always always always carry a planner with me. I even use different color highlighters to show what each event on my calendar
Is for. For example pink I personal, yellow is school, orange is work, blue is for appointments, and green is for my sorority. Although I use white out frequently I can see bright yellow that if have that project for finance due on Tuesday I need to start working on it on [the previous] Wednesday so I can just get it done. My friends have always been amazed at how early I can get things done.

Sarah’s Academic Success Story

Sarah’s Academic Success Story
Part 1
Time management because a key factor in my study skills for college. In high school, there were times I was able to study for an hour or two the nights before a test and get away with it. This was not the case in college. I may have done this in high school, but in college I started typing up the notes after class. This helped me remember what I just did in class so that a week later when we had a test I was more likely to remember then as well.
My overall study method: Structured. One thing I learned was that I had to adapt or change my study method according to the class. I couldn’t study for a Religion class the same way I study for a Finance class. But making sure I study for each class was a big part- even if it meant carrying around a planner with me at all times was a big part of my success.

Work Together
Part 3
Here are my final words of wisdom for students who want to get better grades in college: A big thing that not many will say is to ask for help when needed it. It’s not a bad thing to understand it’s a bad thing to not do anything about it. Plan your time out so that you completer everything and have time left to double check. Write things down and have good time management skills. Ask for help is probably the biggest thing you can do. I find myself thinking that I would try harder to fail than I do to succeed. It is something that is written to succeed. If that is not who you are then hopefully things I have done can show you that success is something that is amazing to find! Good luck!

Work Together
Part 2
English, math, foreign language tips: For math, all I can say is do the problems assigned. It is the only way to practice and that’s really all it is for math. It’s the same chemistry; if you do the practice problems you will understand the material so much better because you need those subjects are not just memorization like history, you need to be able to apply what you have learned in practical situations. As for English I’m no longer taking I it I say leave yourself plenty of time for writing essays and papers. They take time to get out all the information out of your head and into the paper so doesn’t leave them to the last minute.

WORK TOGETHER

WORK TOGETHER
PART 1
I can and will work as part of the team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like; here you go, just write about something. I had to argue in favor of or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research on writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just fewer than 12 pages but it was full of information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week late I got an A+ on my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was happy and proud of myself.

Reflection: This statement means that if you put in more effort you'll get more results.

Part 2
My strategies for written assignments: I try to outline before I write
because otherwise I forget what I am supposed to be talking about. I try not to leave until the last minute because I will just goof up the work. A lot of time I just write what I feel. Teachers like opinion and if you can find something from the reading or research that relates specifically to your life, they like it even more because it allows you to take ownership of your work. I write because the teacher said so.
How I succeed in team projects: personally, I do not like working on group projects, especially ones I worked on in high school. However, when it required working in a group, usually I try to lead. I like taking the lead because then I will know that my grade will be a good one. That way I know things are going to get done on time and I am going to get a good grade. If I am working I a group of [people how all wasn't to work then it’s a different story.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods
Summary: Tiger Woods ignores his ill half-brother. Even his older brother Earl Jr.has called him but he just doesn't answers to any of his calls.
Reflection:I think that what tiger is doing is wrong but at the same time he might have reasons why he doesn't want to talk or help him out.

How I deal with multiple projects, I break up my studying. I will study for one test for 30 minutes or so and then switch to the other one. If there is some part of a project that I know will not take me very long, in will do it when I don’t have much time. If i am really in crunch for time on a specific day, I will study for one test in the morning and the other in the afternoon or at night. By breaking up the studying into different sections, I feel like I get much more done. Cram sessions do not work for me. I need to study something for a shorter period of time more often for it to sink in.

You Can Succeed Every Day

You Can Succeed Every Day
Part 1
My overall study method: I break up studying over several days and over the course of the evening and day. Cramming never works for me so I try not to do it. I will have longer sessions on nights before big test; I never stay up later than normal before tests. I know that if I test tired I won’t do as well as I would if I were rested.
How I’ve overcome an initial bad grade: I usually look over the test or paper to see did I do that the teacher did not want. Basically I do not stress about bad grade because to me it’s not worth getting really upset about. I do well because I know that I know the material. However if I do get a bad grade I make sure to study for the next one to be even better and so I won’t get surprised by the questions.

“The Importance of Sportsmanship”

Sportsmanship is not only needed when playing on a team, but it is also needed for a job or when trying to complete something that is for a group. Sportsmanship is important because for example if half of the team didn’t have good sportsmanship the team would lose all of the games and never get a chance to get to nationals. The team wouldn’t be able to cooperate at all. Also if the team were to lose a game and half of them didn’t t have good sportsmanship problems will occur and the team wouldn’t except that they lost and would try to fight and talk bad about the other team.

Aquiring the Habits of Highly Successful Students
What is important to you is that you, as you start to reach milestones in your ambitions, you appreciate your own achievements. It is a boost, of course, if others appreciating yourself will strengthen yourself belief, and reinforce your determination to success. Some of the key characteristics you will find in those who are successful are perseverance, prepared to research, plan and work hard, practice a lot even when things do not seem to be going well, and an ability to recover and learn from setbacks. At the outset of whatever it is you are trying to success in, a strong vision of your future , planning, and setting yourself achievable targets can all play an important role.

Effective Study Methods
Part 2
My time management secret: My secret is to use time wisely, I know that on a certain days, I do not have time to run errands or hang out with friends even. Each minute of each day is used for something. One thing that works really ell for me is to write everything down. I mean everything. I write down if I am going to email people, write letters, or study. It works for me to have a planner that goes by the day and shows me what I am going to be doing everyday. Knowing what I have to do helps me plan out my week and my days. If I know I don’t have time on Tuesday I will try to do something’s done by Monday or Sunday. I plan ahead especially if im going to be on the road for volleyball. when Im on the road I bring books to read on the bus/plane/hotel room. Missing class is a killer to make up, but if you are upfront with your professors they can be nice about having things turned in late and not being in class.
